Vulcans win in Quarter Final Cup Clash
Sat 24th March Winlaton 1st XV 21pts WHpl TDSOB 3pts
Winlaton lost the toss and kicked down the slope and with the advantage took the game to the visitors, forcing them back into their 22.
On 6mins Winlaton were awarded a scrum 10 metres from TDSOB line but lost the strike, however Mickey Wharton and the home back-row charged the ball down for Luke Mitchell to touch down in the corner.
Kevin Allison converted a very difficult kick for 7-0.
Winlaton continued to force the visitors to defend.
Winning quality ball through excellent work by their front-row in the scrums and winning good clean ball in the line-outs from Tony Shield.
Scrum half, Mickey Wharton, was able to link up well with No8 Andy Robinson and on 18mins some fine back play, involving Tariq Albassam and Dan Mothersdale, brought Kevin Allison into the line, who chipped forward over the top of the defence for Tariq Albassam to chase and gather. He in turn fed Luke Mitchell, who ran 20 metres to score in the corner. Kevin Allison converted another difficult chance for 14 – 0 lead.
TDSOB were stung into action with a sustained attack and only some fine defensive work by Steve McLeod (as usual), Scott Scullion, Andy Robinson, Glen Page and Tariq Albassam limited them to a penalty on 22mins.
TDSOB converted to make the score 14 – 3. TDSOB who had the difficult wind in their favour used it to great advantage, testing Kevin Allison at every opportunity but they found him up to the task, returning the kicks with interest. Winlaton defended well against a series of attacks by the visitors to lead by 14-3 at the break.
HT 14 – 3
From the start of the second half Winlaton began to give away needless penalties allowing TDSOB the initiative and were lucky not to concede points.
It was only some immaculate line kicking by Kevin Allison that at times saved the day.
Winlaton did penetrate the visitors defence, Andy Robinson touching down but no try was given.
They were more successful when, using his strength and ‘pace’, Dan Mothersdale burst through to score, Kevin Allison converting. Although TDSOB came back strongly they were unable to make a break through and could have gone further behind but Tariq Albassam was stopped just short of the line.
FT: 21 – 3
